After diamonds, pearl is the most common choice for bridal jewellery. Beyond how it looks there's a practical reason: pearl doesn't flare under a camera flash, doesn't leave a white spot in photographs, and doesn't compete with the texture of the dress.

Choosing a Necklace by Neckline

The neckline decides where a necklace can sit, so that's where to start.

Strapless and sweetheart necklines leave a wide open space between the neck and the dress. Necklaces between 40 and 45 cm sit at the base of the neck and balance that space. Chokers also work well here.

With a V-neck, the necklace should follow the line of the neckline, and something between 45 and 50 cm does that.

High necklines, heavy lace and anything closed to the throat leave nowhere for a necklace to sit. Rather than forcing one, put the weight on earrings and hair pieces instead.

Bridal Pearl Necklace Styles

The collection runs from classic single-strand designs to pieces using baroque pearls.

A classic round pearl gives a plain, timeless look and suits traditional cuts. Baroque pearls, which did not grow round, read as more organic and pair well with simpler, modern dresses.

Small seed pearls are often chosen with heavily laced dresses, because they don't fight the texture of the fabric.

Choosing Bridal Earrings

Hair decides this one. If it's going fully up, the earrings will be visible all day and a drop or a more definite shape earns its place. If hair is down or half up, most of an earring disappears, so simple studs make more sense.

With a high-necked dress where no necklace is worn, earrings become the main piece, and that's the case for choosing something bolder.

A Set, or Pieces Chosen Separately?

Choosing a necklace, earrings and bracelet separately carries two risks: pearl sizes that don't match, and metal tones that don't quite agree. Both show up in photographs.

A set removes that, because the pieces were designed against each other. It also takes one decision out of the busiest part of the planning.

Choosing separately gives you flexibility: the necklace picked for the dress, the earrings picked for the hair. If you go that way, staying within one collection keeps them working together.

Tiaras and Hair Pieces

Pearl tiaras, clips and hair pieces do the most with an updo, and they're also used to hide the point where a veil is fixed.

The only thing to watch is that the hair piece and the earrings aren't both making a statement. Let one of them lead and the whole thing stays balanced.

Separate Pieces for the Engagement, Henna Night and Wedding

If you're planning three different looks, choosing all of them from one collection ties the days together.

A common arrangement: something simpler for the engagement, something coloured or baroque for the henna night, and the classic set for the wedding. It avoids repetition in the photographs, and it means the pieces get worn separately afterwards.

How Pearl Photographs

Bright faceted stones are what wedding photographers work hardest around, because they blow out under flash. Pearl doesn't do that. Its surface takes light in and gives it back softened rather than reflecting it straight.
